In Monday’s assembly I set KS2 a challenge – which class could make the longest kindness chain & how long would our kindness chain be if we added them together?

Here is what we achieved:

Class 6b made the longest chain with still other random acts of kindness to add to their chain & as a Key Stage we managed to get our chain around the hall.

Well done to everyone & keep up those random acts of kindness! #kindnessday

(1) Where Am I?

May 16th, 2015

Each week I will be posting clues about where I am in the world, linking to our topic about travelling around the world. On my last post will be all the answers. Each week the clues will get harder. First, lets start easy.

I am in the tallest building in the world. In this place you can’t commit a crime because you will have your hands chopped off. There is a lamborghini world here, and a few scary rides!

Where am I?

Thanks to Sana for inspiring me to do this! 😀 🙂

Help!

Today our focus was give. We looked at ways in which we can give and at how giving can enrich our lives.

The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes, retold by 5b

May 12th, 2015

During our guided reading sessions last week, everyone was given certain stanzas from the Highwayman to learn. The focus was on learning the stanzas to recite whilst incorporating pace, tone and intonation in the final performance. At the end of the week we watched each others performance to help give feedback to each group to help enhance each performance.

Here is our final retelling of the poem ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes.

Highwayman Rehearsal

May 8th, 2015

Over the past week the children have been learning different stanzas from the poem ‘The Highwayman’ which has complemented their written work and their understanding of the poem itself.

Groups were given the task of learning sections of the poem to recite to the rest of the class with a focus on pace, intonation and expression.
Before they perform and record their final section they wanted to perform it to one another in order to receive feedback on what they had done so far and how the poem actually works as a whole.

Below is a video showing snippets of the comment poem.

Please comment on what the children have done well and what each group could do to improve – particularly in relation to the focus of pace, intonation and expression.

Look out for the final version next week.

Learning log homework:Tim the Ostler

May 7th, 2015

This is my homework about Tim the Ostler and and what his role was in the poem ‘ The Highway-man’.

Please feel free to give any feedback or tips on how to improve my writing…

Thank you!

Tim The Ostler:

What was Tim’s role in the poem?

Tim played as the man who loved Bess, but he didn’t like the man who Bess loved. Tim wasn’t a handsome looking man, but he would do anything for Bess as she was the love of his life. I think that Tim would do something devious to try to get rid of the Highwayman as he wanted to be the one that Bess falls for. Tim was mainly brought into the poem because in every forbidden romance, they want two people to love one girl, so they chose Tim to be the evil one, but the one who loved Bess the most( I think?)

Who ordered the soldiers to threaten Bess and kill the Highwayman?

I think that Tim would have ordered the soldiers to threaten Bess because Tim might have wanted the Bess to feel threatened and that the Highwayman will sense that his love is in danger. That, then would mean that the soldiers will have the perfect opportunity to ambush the Highwayman and (hopefully) manage to send Bess to safety. The Highwayman will then be left in an abandoned area, where his remaining parts of his body will be left to rot. Tim is evil like that, and will come up with the most weirdest plans to get Bess to eventually love him, not have feelings for the coward, the Highwayman.

The secrets of the story: Tim

Tim might have been in on the plan, but we don’t know if it was actually Tim who committed the crime. It could have been anyone.. It might have Bess’s dad, the Landlord, it could have been the Highwayman because he might have not liked Bess for herself, he might have liked her for something else. But, if worse comes to worse, it could have been Bess because she might have wanted to commit suicide. So we should never underestimate people, because they could do something out of this world, whether it is good or bad…

Hope you enjoyed reading my view of Tim The Ostler

Bye!:)

My amazing story of the prescriptive of Tim the Ostler (Homework)

May 7th, 2015
Hi, its Noor, and this writing is basically the prescriptive of Tim the Ostler and his betrayal story behind the scene…Please read on for an amazing story!
Silently where I listened, my face was white and peaked,
My eyes were hollows of madness, my hair like mouldy hay,
But I loved the landlord’s daughter–
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter;
Dumb as a dog I listened, and I heard the robber say:
“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart; I’m after a prize tonight,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light.
Yet if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.”
Moments later…
I marched to King Georges army,
To tell them all I knew,
Then suddenly they were gone,
Tlot, tlot, tlot they went to the old inn yard…..
What was his involvement with the soldiers?
When he finds out about the Highwayman’s love for Bess then he tells the soldiers in secret.Did he try to save Bess?
Does he save Bess?
No, because he was the one who betrays Bess in telling where she is and by listening to the conversation between Bess and The Highwayman.
Thank you for reading my amazing piece of work. See me next time in my future blog posts. Just come onto this blog and on TAGGED LEARNING simply press on Noor. Toodles!

My Highwayman Homework! – Tim The Ostler!

May 7th, 2015

Hi! On today’s Highwayman homework, I will be asking and answering questions about Tim The Ostler ( AKA the betrayer of all betrayers! ) Please enjoy! But, before I begin, I must say:

The answers to The Highwayman homework questions are my opinion. If you disagree or feel uncertain about any of my answers, please feel free to type some friendly feedback into the comments section. If you give some great advice, I will give a shout out to you in my next post, saying that you inspired me.It helps! 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 :)

And…

I would like to give a shout out to my friend Eshal for helping me understand The Highwayman. Without her, I would have no idea about The Highwayman and really struggle with my homework.

Thanks again Eshal!

QUESTIONS

Did Tim really know that the soldiers had killed Bess? ( What if they said that they weren’t going to actually kill her, just use her as Highwayman bait? But I bet they would not have thought that Bess would kill herself! )

I think that Tim knew about the soldiers, but he never planned for Bess to die, because I think that Tim thought that when the Highwayman dies, Bess would lose interest and then date Tim. But the Highwayman and Bess had a very strong love.

If Tim didn’t want Bess to die, and he found out that the soldiers killed her, would he have wanted revenge?

I think that Tim did not want Bess to die, and when he found out that she was killed, I think he did want revenge on the soldiers for not keeping their end of the deal.

Did Tim really tell the soldiers about the robbery? Did someone else hear them and tell?

That’s quite a hard question. I think there is a small chance that someone else might have heard, but what if Tim did want to stop the robbery, and Bess dating a Highwayman. He could of been scared of The Highwayman, because he was a robber with a pistol and years of experience. You never know!

Did the landlord know about Tim and did they make up a plan to teach Bess a lesson not to date robbers?

That’s also a really hard question. The landlord might have not liked the fact of his daughter dating a Highwayman, because she kept it a secret, with all the codes and secret tunes of love. So maybe the landlord did want to do something about The Highwayman. But of course, he would not have wanted Bess to die. Or maybe, the landlord was a terrible father, or maybe a stepfather! And he really wanted Bess to die, as well as her boyfriend! Like I said, you never know!

Did Tim try and save Bess from the fiery clutches of death, but died while doing so?

I think that Tim did try to save Bess, the the soldiers stopped him and killed him for trying to take away their only chance of catching the Highwayman. Maybe that’s why they never mention Tim again throughout the poem. Again, YOU NEVER KNOW!

Thank you so much for reading. Remember to add some feedback, and please keep a look out for 16suhai for more blogging fun!

Bye for now!  🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀 🙂 😀

Lost! Part 2

May 5th, 2015

With my heart in my throat, I tried to scream for mum, but out came a small, feeble squeak instead. As my mum walked into the kitchen, she said, ” Do me a favour babe and put these out onto the table will ya?” She handed me a bunch of chocolate bars and a bowl. I sat there, motionless, but mum was too busy to realise. As she got out her favourite magazine, she said, ” Where’s Bella and her mum? They should be here by now.” When I finally plucked up the courage to say something, I stammered, ” Mum…they’re gone.”

As soon as I said that, mum burst out laughing. “Don’t joke about stuff like that!” Only if she knew I wasn’t joking. Although, I do tend to be a little too suspicious about the smallest of things.  Still grinning, mum motioned me to the coffee table and said, “Hurry up you old git! People are coming to our house and we need to set out some snacks!”

Still uncertain, I asked “Can I just pop outside to go to the top-shop to get me and Bella some sweets and maybe the weekly issue of Teenage Girl Booze?” Mum sighed and replied, “OK , only because your mate and her mum are taking ages. I thought they pulled up 5 minutes ago. Huh, must be in they car with their cellphones then. OK, bye babe!” As I reached for the doorknob, mum yelled, “WAIT! Come back ASAP because you have school…” Ignoring her, I slammed the door and ran to where Bella and her mum were last seen.

Thanks for reading! 😀 🙂 😀 🙂                                                            Keep an eye out for Part 3 In Lost!                                                                                                                                                                         Coming soon by 16suhai…

Never coming back

(I am actually coming back, that’s just the name of the new                                           story coming soon!)

Tim the ostler homework

May 3rd, 2015

After Tim the ostler heard what the Highwayman said to Bess he went to tell the soldiers and the soldiers came to Bess and orded her to look out for the Highwayman .

In the downfall of Bess and the Highwayman the part that Tim played was the betrayal  because he said that he loved Bess but he got  jealous of what the Highwayman said to Bess so he told the soldiers  what the Highwayman said so they orded Bess to look out for him so Bess wanted to warn him so she  killed herself .

Tim’s involvement with the soldiers was him telling the soldiers what the Highwayman said to Bess .

No,I don’t think that he was manipulated because he chose to tell the soldiers what the Highwayman said .

Maybe he preoccupied the Landlord because wouldn’t the landlord go upstairs with the soldiers . Maybe he said to the  Landlord something’s happened to one of the horse’s you’ve got to come and see.

No he didn’t try to save Bess.

His actions were cowardly because he said that he loved Bess  so when Bess killed herself the Highwayman  couldn’t have her  and he couldn’t have her .

Lost!

May 3rd, 2015

The rain was crashing down, and my shoes were drenched horribly. I couldn’t give up now. Not now.

“Hurry up Vanessa, you are gonna be late!”
“Ugh”I wailed, begging for more sleep. Suddenly, I heard a car pull up outside our house.
BELLA! Oh. She was with her mother. Oh well, I guess I could tell her the secret later. I changed and raced downstairs. I then saw Bella outside, with her mum. As they turned around the corner, I heard a squeal of fear, not surprise, and Bella and her mum were gone.

Or so it seemed.

Pretty good cliffhanger, right? Don’t worry, there will be an update to this soon!

Re-Write Your Destiny Part 3

May 3rd, 2015

At 6 o clock I came to the field. There I saw something. It was the girl that had told me a little about Cleo. She yelled to me in the distance. I followed the sound. I finally met up with her . ” Cleo joined last year. ” she began ” she  was a low popular girl and was pushed around by everyone. Then  her dad somehow became the president. No clue how. That’s it really. If you utter a word against her then she will banish you from the country. “ she said and looked at me with hope. What! I thought. What am I going to say? I cant do anything against her if her dad is the president. One mistake in my plan ill be banished and grounded for the rest of my life. Should I attempt to save the school or deceive them?

Please comment below if she should attempt to save the school or deceive them. This story tailors around your choices. Both of these choices will have different endings. Vote which one I should do in the comments. The most votes I will write about :D.

Re-Write Your Destiny Part 2

May 3rd, 2015

I pushed my way through the crowd of people and couldn’t see anything although I was at the front. It was because I was short. I crouched down where it smelt of old shoes and stinky feet. I saw a little girl in year 7 or 8 . She was on the floor crying and an older senior was laughing. Then everyone gasped. The senior showed a glare and everyone was silent. Why did everyone stop ? Is the senior a bully?

Then everyone began to walk away. They had seen what they wanted to see. I began pondering looking for somebody to tell me about this senior ( by the way the senior is a girl). I saw a year 9 sitting on the stairs on floor level 3. I walked up to her. “sorry to bother you but do you know anything about this senior?” I asked curious to know more.  “I`m sorry but if she hears anything my reputation will go down the drain” she replied “the only thing  I can tell you is that her name  is Cleo and nobody dare speaks against her so I suggest you don’t even utter a word. Who knows what could happen to you ” She said and began to walk away. “wait!” I cried but also was very quiet not to attract attention. ” Please tell me why everyone is afraid of her and nobody can face her I could help you and save you from her”  She looked up at me and looked like she had one spec of hope. ” I`m going to tell you but not here. Meet me in the field and ill tell you how the school is afraid of her” she said. I smiled and began to think I had made my first friend. But Cleo came in the way of that happiness. Why was the school afraid of her? Can I really help ?

Part 3 coming out soon.

Bradford Holiday!!!!!

May 3rd, 2015

The first day of the holidays was boring.Apart from the bit when my cousins came and we had a huge water-tastic water fight. Then it was already 6 o clock! In at least 5 hours I’d be going to bed! Soon the time had become 11 o clock and I had to go to bed.I couldn’t sleep so I stayed up till 4 o  clock on my tablet watching my favourite gaming youtubers Stacyplays , Joeygraceffa and Pewdiepie. My mum came at 4 and thats when i was caught so I had to go to sleep. The next day I woke up at 1 o clock in the afternoon. My mum told me to stay up if I wanted to go to bradford for some fun.So I couldn’t go back to sleep so I had to get ready. The only reason we were going bradford was because my sisters accommodation was there. She lived in fosters thats where we would be eating for the day.First my mom told me that I should eat before I go on the boats in bradford because it wouldn’t feel good going with an empty stomach. So then I practically begged my mum to get takeout  so we (as a family Taaibah ,Ayesha, me and Rabiah mum didn’t want one) chose that we should get pizza from rajas (because it was the closest to us) and moonlight for cake and milkshakes (also because it was near to us) Then when me and Taaibah ( my sister) went rajas I saw Haniyyah in the shop! We didn’t know what to do or talk about so we just smiled at each other. Then we went moonlight and bought 2 cakes (one chocolate Ferrero Rocher and one mint with aero pieces in) and 4 milkshakes (obviously for the 4 of us).We had spent  £31 already!  2 pound each on milkshakes.5 pound each on the cakes.Pizza was 13 pounds because it was on a offer 3 for 13. 2 for 12.We waited for a few hours before we went on the boats. In our free time my mum talked to my grandma. My sister (Rabiah) went out shopping with her room mate (Amani) a.k.a her biggest best friend ever! Ayesha got her activity book out and me and taaibah were just looking at vines on her phone. It was then about 3 o clock and the boats would have closed at 4 o clock so we hurried to them. When we arrived it was 3:12. We saw that there was a really fun theme park but i was deprived of all my money so i couldn’t buy myself a band thing that you need to enter. It looked so fun with all the colourful , flashy lights that caught my eye but we had to go to go boats. The boats only carried 5 people so all of us could fit. They were red, black, and white and had pedals. PEDALS!!!!!It tired me out and Although I was the second to last oldest I still had to pedal. PEDAL!!! It hurt my legs real bad and I couldn’t take it anymore. I swapped with Taaibah to stop peddling. PEDALLING!! Relief. Then I saw something I didn’t see  whilst I was pedalling was swans and ducks . Sadly there were no fishes because it was only a lake. Then as a joke mum told me to get that egg. The egg that the duck layer. Rabiah pedalled toward that egg and my mum shouted that it was a JOKE!!! And we ended up being stuck in the plants for like 15 minutes. That made me Think that this was sickening I mean i saw a spider! A SPIDER!!!!! I screamed and yelped and the boat started to rock. Luckily we didn’t fall in It was yucky green water but it looked beautiful as it gleamed amongst then dept of the sunlight which  reflected upon the water. I thought there was going to be a rainbow as a rainbow reflects of the water drops as the sunlight hits it! I love it when sunlight shines on a watered object. When the ride was over we went walking back to our sisters accommodation . We saw flowers with a variety of colours and fragrances. I was delighted to smell the scent of them. Just like my disney princess perfume. Then We went down the stairs that were at the side. At first i didn’t even see them  but they were in a corner and when I went down them and saw water fountains all different shapes and sizes. They were beautiful. I loved them And we took millions and millions old photos around them! Like the day before this holiday I grabbed some water and threw it on my sister she screamed so loud that even glass could have broke if it was around her. The only reason she was so angry was because I wet her hair. Then, being super angry she grabbed so much water and aimed for me. I ran really fast away and I knew I didn’t want to get on her bad side! This was like a story I had read before. I just memorised the line of one of the chapters. It played through my head.  ( by the way this is the line not what I am saying) I ran for my life taking each breathe carefully. I knew I didn’t want to get caught by this monster and Im sure that no one else would either… Thats what is said and then i stopped because my other sister Ayesha was on the other side so I was washed out. DOUBLE! I was soaking and I wore my favourite dress. UGH! Then  we had reached our car and drove to my sisters accomidation. That was basically the end of today but when I got home a new story started. Me and Ayesha right before there sun set we played with our pink, sparkly ball. We played catch  and basket ball it was very fun. Then from last years Christmas I got my badminton set out and me and Ayesha played with it. Ayesha was young so she didn’t know the rules of the game. That was my holiday. Stay tuned for part 2 of my holidays. It would be great if u could comment a question about this holiday as I have written 1043 words (including the numbers and also including the info Im writing now)

Re-write your destiny part 1

May 3rd, 2015

Your future is your choice. You don’t need to follow in anybody’s footsteps. Everything could go way out of hand. You can rewrite your own destiny. It’s your life and you can live it up however you want. This is so something similar happened to me (Sasha) below is my story :

I joined a new school. Everything was new even me. My name was Sasha. I was an normal girl wanting to live a normal school life but even begging for it  would not make it happen. I walked through the entrance and got up some stairs until I heard someone yell behind me someone who was crying . I turned but a crowd of people were blocking my view. Who was crying ? Why were they?

Stay tuned and watch out for part 2

What is happening on May 7th?

Hello and welcome to class 5B`s blog. I will be posting both posts and comments as well as my class mates. But we each have our side of the story. I will be blogging daily and be writing stories and write about school things. But as I said all of our posts (although they are about the same things) have our side. So whilst you are scrolling down if some post has the same name as another read both! They will both be very different. Comment your favourite post so far out of the ones you`ve seen. Thank You x 😀

The Highwayman Learning Log Task

May 3rd, 2015

What is my understanding of the poem?

I understand that the poem ‘The Highwayman’ is a sorrowful love story set in the 1700’s. It portrays two lovers; The Highwayman and Bess, the Landlord’s daughter who would do anything for their deep love to survive. On the other hand, Tim who works at the inn, also secretly has feelings for Bess. Therefore, in order to get revenge, he wants The Highwayman dead and out of his way. Tim takes advantage and tells the soldiers about the robber-The Highwayman. The Kings men use Bess as bait but she sacrifices her life for her love. When The Highwayman is also killed by the redcoats, ghostly galleons they became!

What is the theme of the poem?

The theme of the poem, ‘The Highwayman’ is sacrifice one’s life for their true love. (i.e. Bess gives up her life in order to warn her love about the danger he was getting himself into).

Who was to blame for the tragedy?

Tim the ostler is to blame for the tragedy because if he had not told the soldiers about how The Highwayman’s robberies, then Bess would not have been used as bait to get to The Highwayman and both of them would not have been calamitously killed.

Highwayman question

May 3rd, 2015

Was it a happy or sad story?

I think its a sad story because its about when  the Highwayman meets Bess the landlords black-eyed daughter and they fall for each other but they  can’t be together because gets mad and wanted Bess for  himself  suddenly bot of them got killed they ghosts then together they could be without anyone watching.

Homework: Tim the ostler

May 3rd, 2015

Unknown-5

Dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim, the ostler listened–his face was white and peaked–
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter–
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter;
Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say:

“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart; I’m after a prize tonight,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light.
Yet if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way.”

He stood upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand,
But she loosened her hair in the casement! His face burnt like a brand
As the sweet black waves of perfume came tumbling o’er his breast,
Then he kissed its waves in the moonlight
(O sweet black waves in the moonlight!),
And he tugged at his reins in the moonlight, and galloped away to the
west.

Through our many discussions of the Highwayman we have hypothesised what actually happened to Tim the ostler after he was seen spying on Bess and the Highwayman in the shadows. In anticipation of our extended piece of writing next week I want you to discuss what happened to Tim after he heard the Highwayman say he would be back? What part did he have to play in the downfall of Bess and the Highwayman? What was his involvement with the soldiers? Was he manipulated by them? Did he preoccupy the Landlord, so he couldn’t save Bess? Did he try to save Bess? Were his actions deemed cowardly?

These are just a few questions to pondered and respond to – can you come up with other questions to aid our discussion?

The lurking shadow …

April 30th, 2015

As they turned the corner there was a tall dark figure in the distance . The tall figure wore a black hat and a black suit . For days they had been seeing a shadow that looked exactly like it . When they tried to tell someone no one believed it . They just told them to ignore it .

the next day in the evening

the next day they thought they saw the shadow . But it wasn’t the shadow it was the tall black figure again . The tall black figure was getting closer to them . All of a sudden you could here the faint scream of a girl …

Highwayman sentences

April 27th, 2015

Bess

Highwayman

During your guided reading blogging session this week I want you to write 2 sentence types using the images of the Highwayman and Bess from the poem.

For the Highwayman I want you to write a Tell: show 3; example sentence.

How to write a Tell: show 3; example sentence

This is a two-part sentence. The first part tells the reader a broad-ranging fact/opinion about a subject.
e.g. He was feeling relaxed
This is followed by a colon which demonstrating that a list of examples will follow.

He was feeling relaxed:
After the colon, the list of 3 examples follows (in this instance actions that show that the person is relaxed.)
He was feeling relaxed: shoes off; shirt undone; lying on the sofa.
As this is a phrase list (rather than single words) semicolons are used between details rather than commas.

For the Bess image I want you to write a Name – adjective pair – sentence.

How to write name – adjective pair – sentence

This sentence is where the name and details form the main clause and are separated and explained by 2 qualities described in the adjective pair.

name – 2 adjectives – followed by the detail

QUESTIONS

Who was to blame for the tragedy?

That is a really hard question, because each character plays a part in the tradegy, so basically everyone was to blame. The landlord (The owner of the pub) might have heard the soldiers assaulting his daughter, and yet, he did nothing. Tim the Ostler is also to blame, because he loved Bess, and was angry and hurt that she was with someone else. So he was selfish, and betrayed them by telling King George’s men about the robbery. The Highwayman was also to blame because if he did not rob people, none of this would have happened, and Bess and himself would still be alive. King George’s men were also to blame because they tied up Bess with a rifle (A musket) next to her, and she killed herself, which made the Highwayman an easy target, because he went mad with grief. Also Bess was to blame because she never should  have supported the Highwayman and his robbery, because if she didn’t, she would have nothing to do with the robbery and King George’s men would have had no right to assault her.

Was it a happy story or a sad story?

I think it is a bit of both. The sad part is that Bess and the Highwayman die, and the Landlord would obviously be grieving and mourning for his daughter, and he probably hates the Highwayman for bringing her into such a deadly problem. The happy part is that Bess and the Highwayman are now spirits that are haunting their place of death, but they still have each other. Does it not make your heart melt? 🙂 🙁 🙂

What do you think Tim had to gain?

I think Tim gains the death of the Highwayman and he also gains Bess not being in a relationship with anyone but him. But actually, the death of the couple made them ghosts/spirits which brings them closer together because then nobody can interfere with their love, which makes Bess and the Highwayman in their own private world together.

Whoever has read this, I really hoped you enjoyed it. I took my time and it has really paid off. Please keep an eye out for 16suhai for more fun learning! Thanks for reading! My work here is done. (Literally)

Bye!!! 🙂

The Highwayman homework questions

April 24th, 2015

Over this half term we are studying the poem ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes.

This week we have deconstructed the poem and analysed it’s meaning with the goal of understanding what it is really is about. In doing so we have pondered a range of questions that we want to explore.

What is my understanding of the poem? What are the themes that run through the poem?
Who was to blame for the tragedy?
Was it a happy or sad story?
What do you think Tim had to gain?
Was there a happy ending?
What was the Landlords role in this poem?

For our learning log home work, comment on at least 3 of the questions above – including detailed explanations of why you think that. You can also comment on the opinions of others. Use the previous post of the poem to help you with your answers.

The Highwayman Poem by Alfred Noyes

April 24th, 2015

The Highwayman
By Alfred Noyes

The wind was a torrent of darkness upon the gusty trees,
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
The road was a ribbon of moonlight looping the purple moor,
And the highwayman came riding–
Riding–riding–
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn door.

He’d a French cocked hat on his forehead, and a bunch of lace at his
chin;
He’d a coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of fine doe-skin.
They fitted with never a wrinkle; his boots were up to his thigh!
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle–
His rapier hilt a-twinkle–
His pistol butts a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.

Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
He tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred,
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter–
Bess, the landlord’s daughter–
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

Dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
Where Tim, the ostler listened–his face was white and peaked–
His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
But he loved the landlord’s daughter–
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter;

(O sweet black waves in the moonlight!),
And he tugged at his reins in the moonlight, and galloped away to the
west.

He did not come in the dawning; he did not come at noon.
And out of the tawny sunset, before the rise of the moon,
When the road was a gypsy’s ribbon over the purple moor,
The redcoat troops came marching–
Marching–marching–
King George’s men came marching, up to the old inn-door.

They said no word to the landlord; they drank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow
bed.
Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets by their side;
There was Death at every window,
And Hell at one dark window,
For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.

They had bound her up at attention, with many a sniggering jest!
They had tied a rifle beside her, with the barrel beneath her breast!
“Now keep good watch!” and they kissed her. She heard the dead man
say,
“Look for me by moonlight,
Watch for me by moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by moonlight, though Hell should bar the way.”

She twisted her hands behind her, but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by
like years,
Till, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!

The tip of one finger touched it, she strove no more for the rest;
Up, she stood up at attention, with the barrel beneath her breast.
She would not risk their hearing, she would not strive again,
For the road lay bare in the moonlight,
Blank and bare in the moonlight,
And the blood in her veins, in the moonlight, throbbed to her love’s
refrain.

Tlot tlot, tlot tlot! Had they heard it? The horse-hooves, ringing clear;
Tlot tlot, tlot tlot, in the distance! Were they deaf that they did not
hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding–
Riding–riding–
The redcoats looked to their priming! She stood up straight and still.
Tlot tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer! Her face was like a light!
Her eyes grew wide for a moment, she drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight–
Her musket shattered the moonlight–
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him–with her death.

He turned, he spurred to the West; he did not know who stood
Bowed, with her head o’er the casement, drenched in her own red blood!
Not till the dawn did he hear it, and his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness
there.

Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were his spurs in the golden noon, wine-red was his velvet coat
When they shot him down in the highway,
Down like a dog in the highway,
And he lay in his blood in the highway, with the bunch of lace at his
throat.

And still on a winter’s night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
When the road is a gypsy’s ribbon looping the purple moor,
The highwayman comes riding–
Riding–riding–
The highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard,
He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred,
He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter–
Bess, the landlord’s daughter–
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.
